he lives camped out at sunset beach some 6 miles from where we stand downtown. he says he's a minister for the "whole earth church of christ." i ask him where that is. he steps back, raises his hands: "you're looking at it."

says he doesn't preach much; he just tries to help the people he comes across. says people need help; it's hard "out here."

On March 4, 2006, Nata made history by becoming the first village in Botswana with a website. natavillage.org is a unique opportunity for the reader to witness the battle to control the spread of HIV/AIDS in an African village. Botswana has the second highest HIV infection rate in the world (37% for ages 15-49). The co-founders, a Canadian traveler, a U.S. Peace Corps Volunteer, and a local businessman were all frustrated that millions of dollars pour into Botswana due to the AIDS pandemic yet little money reaches remote villages like Nata. The site www.natavillage.org offers the visitor 3 videoblogs, a 10 minute documentary ( WATCH NOW), over 350 flickr photos and a blog that gives the reader an intimate look into the lives of the villagers. The reader is given the opportunity to donate directly to the village and the funds are managed transparently by a local 6 member board of trustees with very little overhead cost. The donor can see the results of their generosity through regular photos of what is purchased. People living with AIDS (PLWA's) in Nata must travel 60 miles to reach the ARV (anti-retroviral ) clinic. Many can't afford the $4.00 bus fare. The trust provides transportation money for all members of the PLWA support group to reach their life saving ARV's. The trust also purchased a sound system and generator for an out of school youth group that provides vital HIV/AIDS educational activities to Nata and the surrounding villages. We hope to serve as a model for other villages and change the way aid is distributed in the developing world

This was another gallery art experiment, created for the first Seattle Erotic Art Festival.

What was clear to me is that different people experience eroticism in very different people. With this piece I illustrated the more literary and intellectual experiences of eroticism. The text in the background is the opening chapter of Georges Bataille's Story of the Eye, while the foreground is inspired by an advertisement for some (i believe) long-gone dot-com company.

Interestingly, this print did NOT sell at the festival, though I have entertained a couple special requests for it since then.

More than 30 life-size sculptures of a naked male body are to be exhibited across the London skyscape.

Westminster council has followed Lambeth by giving planning consent to the work by Antony Gormley.

The installation, called Event Horizon, is one of the largest-ever urban public art commissions. It will be mounted next month to coincide with the first major London exhibition of Gormley's work, to be held at the Hayward Gallery from 17 May to 19 August.

The figures, based on the sculptor's own body, will be placed in various locations near Waterloo Bridge, including the London Television Centre, the National Theatre and the Shell Centre. All will face the Hayward Centre.

The final sculpture is planned for the United Grand Lodge of England and will be considered by Camden council next week. Letters supporting Gormley, designer of the Angel Of The North, were received from architect Richard Rogers, the National Gallery, National Portrait Gallery, V&A, Royal Academy and the Tate.

Following calls to outlaw the hunting of foxes, pro-hunt supporters converged on Brighton during the Labour Party Conference to voice their opinion to the Labour Government. As part of the protests, a van pulled up near the train station, the rear doors were opened, a rope was tied to a lamppost before the van moved away, dragging the body of a horse onto the road. The driver then pushed a placard through the animals ribcage before driving away.

The stunt caused a huge divide of opinion in the people passing by with hunt supporters laughing, joking and taking pictures while shoppers and children looked on in shock and disgust

This is the first time I've caught a gecko with its tongue out. It may have been taunting me, or maybe it was sizing up my potential as a meal, not sure which. Anyway, this one didn't seem as timid as most, and scurried down the trunk of this manila palm until it was just above my head. It repeated this eye-licking maneuver several times, and I was lucky enough to capture one of them. The whole open-mouth-stick-out-tongue-lick-eyeball-retract-tongue-close-mouth sequence only takes a fraction of a second, so I was amazed I caught it at all.

Maybe now I can move on to cats or babies or something (ya, right!)

Messing about for a few minutes at the french windows with an idea of gawping through each pane resulted in a surprisingly nice product... to me, the three anielas look like three glowing angel spirits coming back to haunt/bless someone in their new house... gathered only just behind that thin door... as if about to push their way in...

Ironic as on the same day I nearly got killed (i think) by a herd of cows who stampeded after me when I tried to photograph an interesting rundown house with grass coming out of the windows. I'll get to photograph it someday, when the cows have buggered off.

Interestingly, for the millions of people enrolled in yoga classes, the Islamic form of prayer has provided Muslims for fourteen centuries with some of yoga’s same (and even superior) benefits. This simple form of “yoga” offers physical, mental, and spiritual benefits five times a day as Muslims assume certain positions while reciting Qur’an and athkar (remembrances).

If you’re interested read further…

The Muslim prayer has five positions, and they all have a corresponding relationship with our spiritual and mental well being, according to modern scientific research.

The Takbir and Al Qiyyam (mountain pose in Yoga) - found to improve posture, balance, and self-awareness. Normalizes blood pressure, breathing, thus providing many benefits to asthma heart patients.

Placement of hands on the chest during the Qiyyam position - activates the nerve pathway, which directs our awareness of self in the world and controls the health of the muscular system, skin, intestines, liver, pancreas, gallbladder and eyes.

When the hands are held open for du’a, they activate the heart ; center of the feelings of love, harmony, and peace, and to control love and compassion. It also governs the health of the heart, lungs, thymus, immune system, and circulatory system.

When Muslims recite the Qur’an, old thoughts, feelings, fears and guilt are released or healed, and blood pressure and stress levels are reduced. Some specific sounds, in fact, correspond to major organs in the body. Vibrations made when pronouncing the long vowels, 'A', 'E' and 'U,' stimulated the heart, lungs, and the thyroid, pineal, pituitary, and adrenal glands.

The position of Ruku (forward bend) stretches the muscles of the lower back, thighs, legs and calves, and allows blood to be pumped down into the upper torso. It tones the muscles of the stomach, abdomen, and kidneys. Forming a right angle allows the stomach muscles to develop, and prevents flabbiness in the mid-section.

It also promotes a greater flow of blood into the upper regions of body – particularly to the head, eyes, ears, nose, brain, and lungs – allowing mental toxins to be released.

The Sujud - activates the person’s spiritual connection with the universe around them and their enthusiasm for spiritual pursuits. This nerve pathway is also correlated to the health of the brain, nervous system, and pineal gland. Controls basic human survival instincts and provides essential grounding. This helps to develop levelheaded and positive thinking along with a highly motivated view of life, and maintains the health of the lymph and skeletal systems, the prostate, bladder, and the adrenal glands.

The position of Al Qaadah) -(Thunderbolt Pose in yoga), which firms the toes, knees, thighs, and legs. good for those prone to excessive sleep, and those who like to keep long hours. Furthermore, this position assists in speedy digestion, aids the detoxification of the liver, and stimulates peristaltic action in the large intestine.

Last, but not least, the by turning the head towards first the right and then the left shoulder in the closing of the prayer - This nerve path is linked to the throat, neck, arms, hands, bronchials, and hearing – effecting individual creativity and communication.

Sunday Driver

Sunday Driver

story:

So the police call me at home at 9:30 AM Sunday morning ... and tell me my car was involved in an accident. My first panicky thought was "what'd I do?" and my second was "what'd my car do without me?" and my third was to grab my camera as I dash out the door and up the hill. I am greeted by the scene you see here.

The SFPD just wants me to move my car (not shown), which was parked seven feet away from the modern sculpture you see above. My vehicle was just an innocent bystander.

Somehow the driver managed to build this little masterpiece while backing out of his driveway Sunday morning. My car needed to move so they could fit the tow truck in there for some artistic deconstruction.

No one was injured in the accident (whew).

The presumed owners of the BMW 2002 (shown on its side), in pajamas, were present sitting on their steps -- they had parked in front of their house. She was sobbing on the telephone as the police dropped flares to block off the street. Neighbors and joggers stood around and tried to reverse-engineer the physics.

The driver was an older man, with handicapped plates. He called the police.

UK - London - The Tower of London: Henry III's Torture Display - The Rack
Originally uploaded by wallyg.

The lower chamber of the Wakefield Tower contained a guard room where the soliders who guarded the old Henry III Watergate were stationed. This overlooked the river through a series of arrow slits, until about 1820 when the foreshore was built up to form the new Outer Ward. Today, the lower chamber contains replicas of three torture instruments, known to have been used in the Tower of London in the past.
The Rack was the the Tower of London's most infamous instrument of torture. It was a large iron frame containing three wooden rollers. One warder could operate it by turning the central roller with a lever. Ropes ran to the other rollers at the head and foot of the rack, making them turn in opposite directions. The central roller also had an iron ratchet and teeth, holding it in position and keeping the victim stretched. This replica is based on a diagram showing what remained of the rack in the 18th century, when it was found in storage. It has since been lost.
