Wellhead, Burton-by-Lincoln, Lincolnshire

Two miles north of Lincoln just below the Lincoln Ridge is the little spring line village of Burton-by-Lincoln. The area has been inhabited since time immemorial because of the source of fresh water from the spring which it is said has never been known to run dry. In around 200AD a Roman Villa was sited here for just this reason.

There are two wellheads in the village from which water can be drawn. This one, half way down the escarpment, at the entrance of the drive to the Church, bears a simple engraved stone plaque with the letter "M" (*) and the date 1860.

(*)Lord Monson was the local landowner.

Some "Nice" young ladies enjoying a romantic stroll in the park!

Beckford's Tower staircase: 120-feet! Beckford was responsible for the great folly, Fonthill Abbey - lacked proper foundations and fell (the importance of planning!)

victorian glass model of sea creature: Partuguese man-of-war

An intricate model of a Portuguese Man-of-War (Physalia arethusa)
The 'float' is about 55mm wide by 90mm long. Total height: 240mm. There are about two hundred tentacles made of thin coloured glass, supported and attached by fine copper wires.

Read all about this remarkable museum collection, from how they came to be in the museum to how we conserve the delicate antique glass models, along with more images on Rhagor, the collections based website from Amgueddfa Cymru - National Museum Wales.
