This shows how the Turks dealt with problem cases. Ivo Andric describes this exact scene in "Bridge on the Drina", and adds that the impaling is done by Roma (Gypsies) who are specially trained to be able to hammer a stake into the anus and out between the shoulder blades without hitting any organs. You really want to get the new guy here, because he might graze a lung and get you off this mortal coil a few hours earlier.
